Why Beach Litter is a Problem

Threatens Marine Life

Ocean pollution is destroying marine life and ecosystems. Each year, about 12 million tons of plastic enter the ocean. Discarded fishing nets, plastic, cigarette butts, and other debris entangle, injure, and poison marine animals, threatening their survival.

Risks Human Health

Dangerous beach litter—like broken glass, metal scraps, and needles—poses risks to beachgoers and often ends up in the ocean. Plastics break down into microplastics, which marine animals ingest, passing harmful chemicals on to people through seafood.

Fuels Climate Change

The 85% of marine litter is plastic, which is made from fossil fuels like crude oil and natural gas. As plastic breaks down (especially under sunlight on beaches), greenhouse gases are released—fueling climate change.

“Marine debris can injure or kill marine and coastal wildlife; damage and degrade habitats; interfere with navigational safety; cause economic loss to fishing and maritime industries; degrade the quality of life in coastal communities; and threaten human health and safety.”

The Solution

Clean Shores is tackling the Northeast's marine pollution crisis as millions of tons of waste enter the oceans each year. Backed by a coalition of New England nonprofits, the initiative is raising funds to deploy a BeBot, an eco-friendly, beach-cleaning robot that removes hidden litter from the sand.

The BeBot is an all-electric, solar- and battery-powered machine that cleans beaches faster and more thoroughly than manual cleanups, all while protecting habitats and wildlife.

Every donation supports this cutting-edge effort to keep Northeast beaches pristine and inspire lasting environmental change.

Educate People

We’ll use BeBot events to educate people about the long-term damage of beach pollution and the critical role clean beaches play in ocean conservation.

Analyze Data

Collected debris will be analyzed to refine cleanup strategies, generate ideas to prevent littering, and develop ways to promote long-term sustainability.

How BeBot Helps Ocean Conservation

BeBot is a game-changer in beach cleaning—fully electric, remotely controlled, and eco-friendly. Designed to remove small to medium debris without harming delicate ecosystems, it uses advanced screening technology and a high-capacity collection system for efficient, sustainable cleanup. It removes beach litter before it can make its way into the ocean.
